Matcha Oat Drink by Oatly
Oatly has finally released their Matcha Oat Milk in my country and area, so I was able to try it! I see the little to-go can online, but I actually got the big tetrapak.
General Info
So, Oatly sells oat milk and this one is supposed to be matcha latte flavored. It costs 2,99 Euro.
Color and Smell
It is more green than I expected; other ready-made matcha products, especially combined with any milk, usually look very watered down, barely green. This one is clearly green, even if it is not as vibrant and has more of a yellowish, oxidized tint - makes sense for the product, after all, who knows how long the matcha has been in there. It smells like any oatly plant milk.
Taste
Unfortunately, it just tastes very sweet, with a very very slight grassy aftertaste. You notice there is something else in it than usual, but it's not strong enough. If I didn't know what's in it due to the packaging, I wouldn't be able to guess that this is supposed to be matcha milk. It's not even bitter or anything, just sweet and a hint of your neighbor's lawn if you really focus and know. I tried putting it into a cup of matcha tea made with high quality matcha powder, and it just ruined the beverage, honestly.
Conclusion
It's not disgusting; it does taste nice by itself, so do not mistake the rating for a necessarily bad tasting product, but it is simply not offering enough matcha taste for me to rate it higher. You can't even use it to buffer your other cups of matcha or use it as the latte element in a matcha latte. This may be okay to get once or twice if you don't really like matcha but somehow want to drink a sweetened milky beverage that is green.
